The Story
After having just crossed the Austria-Italy border by car, we were making our along the Strada Statale 49 through a narrow valley surrounded by towering mountain ranges on either side. To our right, just above a snow covered ridge I was able to make out the faint outline of a church spire. The burnt terra cotta hue of the spire was a stunning contrast amidst the blanket of feathery, white snow falling all around it.
We made a quick right turn to exit the highway in search of this church, meandering along the centuries-old cobblestone streets of a sleepy Tyrolean town. All the street signs were written in both Italian and German, and it was a strange feeling being on Italian soil that only 100 years ago was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The history of the region was palpable.
It was a bit of a treacherous climb up to the church, with patches of slick ice that seriously challenged our inappropriate footwear. But in the end, I made it to a clearing on a hill beneath the church that I thought would provide the perfect vantage point to make an image.
The resulting image strikes a nice balance between mystery and harmony.

Custom Presentation Options
Due to the complexity of matting and framing options, it is not feasible to select custom mat and frame options via the online ordering process; therefore, by default, prints are shipped without mats and/or frames and it is the buyer’s responsibility to mat and frame their Open Edition print should they choose to.
If you are interested in ordering an Open Edition print that will be shipped in a mat and/or frame, before placing your order, please contact me and I will personally work with you to find presentation options that best suit the work and the location it will be displayed. Please note that custom presentation options will incur an additional cost.
To learn more about custom presentation options, please see the Custom Presentation FAQ.
